The club was formed as Swaledale Road Runners in 1986 and we currently have around 130 members. We are proud of our reputation for being a very friendly club and we welcome runners of all abilities and paces. Within our membership we have many members who regularly compete in endurance events from 5km through to Marathon distance on the road. We are proud to be included in the Harrogate District Summer Race League. We also have a growing number of members taking part in fell and trail races and the club is always well represented at the Swaledale Marathon.
As well as catering for competitive runners we feel it is equally important to provide a supportive environment for those members who only wish to run for recreation, fitness and to enjoy the social aspect of our club.
The club is run by an elected committee. All members are encouraged to take an active role in contributing to the running of the club, by volunteering to help with events or train as Leaders or Coaches. Committee members are always happy to be contacted with suggestions and feedback for developing the club. See the Committee page for further information. The club has an AGM each year in April.
The Richmond Castle 10K is always a highlight of our year. More information about the race can be found here. We also have a Christmas awards celebration in December.
2011 was our 25th anniversary year. We had a wonderful ceilidh at Richmondshire Cricket Club in September to celebrate the occasion. We also revived our club championship to mark our anniversary.
In January 2012 we started our first Run England group for beginners. That summer our members ran a relay coast to coast between St Bees and Robin Hoods Bay. The team completed the challenge in three days of running and in doing so raised over £1000 for charity.
The club is affiliated to England Athletics and in April 2014 we achieved Accredited Club Status. In the same month a vote was taken at the AGM to change the name of the club to Swaledale Runners to reflect the diverse activities our members take part in and the inclusive nature of the club.
